Married at the home of the bride's uncle, B.B. Payne, in Afton [Chenango Co., NY], Friday evening, at 7 o'clock, Aranley E. Sargent and Miss Julia E. Payne by the Rev. C.O. Fuller. The ring service was used. [MHD notation: Aug. 7, 1917]
At one o'clock on Friday afternoon, May 5, Lena Grace Sherman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sherman, and Clarence Arthur Gifford, son of Mrs. Daniel Gifford of Sidney, were married at the home of the bride, at East Afton [Chenango Co., NY], with Rev. Lynn Crawford of Bradford, uncle of the bride officiating. The bride was attired in a blue traveling dress with accessories to match. The couple was attended by Miss Florence Sherman, sister of the bride, and Mr. Harvey Gifford, brother of the groom. Upon their return from a few days at Niagara Falls and other points of internet they will reside near Sidney [Delaware Co., NY]. About 50 attended the wedding. [MHD notation: Married 1939]
Celebrates 41st Anniversary: Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sherman were honored at a surprise 41st anniversary party Saturday night, Oct. 8, 1949, at their home. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Sutton and children, Marion, Zilphia, Herbert, Jr., Elva, Melvin, Carolyn and George, from Vestal; Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Sherman and children, Melrose, Chester and Howard; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gifford and daughters, Phyllis and Lucille; Clarence Sherman, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Sherman and daughter, Nancy; Mrs. Jennie Merritt and William Gould, all from Afton. Those present from Bainbridge were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sherman and children, Marion, Floyd, Henry and Gerald; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Ireland and son, Wallace; Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Sherman and son, Billy; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Sherman and daughter Vurla; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Sherman and daughters, Katherine, Gloria, Patricia, Mary, Louise, Dolores and Sharon; Miss Kathleen Francisco, Wesley and Frances Sherman. Also Miss Joan Carson, of Deposit. The evening was spent by playing cards and other games. Refreshments consisted of a beautiful anniversary cake and ice cream. The couple received many nice gifts, candy, money and many cards. [MHD notation: 1949]
