Carroll C. Brooks

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Carroll  C. Brooks, one of the best known and most respected residents of Norwich, died suddenly at his home on North Broad street Thursday morning of last week.  Mr. Brooks was born in Pharsalia [Chenango Co., NY] June 1, 1846, and when 8 years of age his parents removed to this village, where he was educated and where as a young man he engaged as clerk in a book store.  Afterwards he was appointed deputy postmaster and filled that position with credit to himself and general satisfaction of the public for a period of 27 years, when failing health necessitated his retirement.  He was a member of the Broad Street Methodist Church, having united during the pastorate of Rev. A.J. Van Cleft.  He had filled numerous positions in the church, being a steward and member of the Official Board, a class leader, chorister in the Sunday school and for several years sexton.  He was for many years a singer and cornetist in the choir.  He will be sadly missed in the church which passed a fitting tribute on his death.  In 1870 Mr. Brooks married Nettie C. Wait, daughter of Demmon Wait, who survives him together with one daughter, Miss L. Belle Brooks.  There also survive three brothers, Bifield and Sherman, of Norwich, and Freeman, of Homer;  together with three sisters, Mrs. Aurelia Carruth, Mrs. Frank Brown and Mrs. A.E. Race, all of this village.

Mrs. Alson Mills, mother of Mrs. Frank Clark, died at the home of Mrs. Clark in Guilford, Friday, January 3, 1896, at the age of 92 years.  Many of the older residents of this town will remember the lady and will be pained to hear of her death.  She had always possessed good health up to two years aog, when she fell and broke her hip.
 
William Thayer
Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY, 1906
William Thayer, died from consumption at his home, on River street, Tuesday afternoon, at the age of 66 years.  Mr. Thayer had been ill for about a year but had not been considered seriously so until about three weeks ago since which time he has been confined to the house.  He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Frank Mead, who resides with her parents.  The funeral will be held today (Thursday) at 2 o'clock, at the Methodist church, Rev. G.E VanWoert officiating.  Burial in Green Lawn cemetery [Bainbridge, NY], conducted by the Masonic fraternity.  [Dec. 11, 1906]
 
George W. Hill

Funeral services for George W. Hill, 84, of 27 Jenison Avenue, Johnson City, who died yesterday afternoon at Wilson Memorial Hospital, will be at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at the J.F. Rice Funeral Home, 150 Main Street, Johnson City.  The Rev. Francis Freeman, pastor of Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial Methodist Church, will officiate at services for the brother of William H. Hill of Westover, Broome County Republican chairman and publisher of the Binghamton Sun.  Burial will be in Riverhurst Cemetery, Endwell, at the convenience of the family.  Mr. Hill was admitted to the hospital early yesterday, after he suffered a heart attack.  A native of Forty-Fort, Pa., he had been a resident of the Triple Cities area for about 65 years.  Until his retirement 10 years ago, he was employed by the Johnson City Publishing Co.  In addition to the GOP chairman, Mr. Hill is survived by one other brother, James B. Hill, and a sister, Mrs. Bessie H. Fell, both of Johnson City, and several nieces and nephews.

Harry G. Horton, 77, of Afton, died at 1:32 p.m. yesterday at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, after a short illness. he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pearl Margaret Horton of Afton; two nieces, Mrs. Martha Jeffers of Afton and Mrs. Mary Peet of Gouverneur; a nephew, Robert Tew of Syracuse, and several cousins.  He was a member of the Afton Baptist Church and had operated a hardware store in Afton for many years.  The body was moved to the Karschner Funeral Home, Afton.

Dr. Clayton M. Axtell, Sr., for 43 years a physician in the Village of Deposit [Broome Co., NY], died shortly before 3 o'clock this morning at City Hospital, He was 72.  He had been in the hospital since Thursday, when  he suffered a heart attack upon returning to his office after visiting a patient.  Dr. Axtell had conducted a general medical practice in Deposit since 1915.  He was a 1909 graduate of the Cornell University School of Medicine and came to Deposit after practicing in Sidney and Sidney Center.  Among his survivors is Clayton M. Axtell, Jr., a Binghamton attorney and resident of Hillcrest.  Dr. Axtell was this year's and last year's candidate of the Broome County Medical Society for designation as the outstanding general practitioner in New York State. Last June he was honored by the Deposit Community Council, which he has served as a director, for long service to the community.  He was born Feb. 24, 1886, in Barbourville, N.Y., the son of a farmer and onetime Republican assemblyman, Delos Axtell.  He was graduated from Deposit High School in 1904.  Upon completion of medical school he was an intern for two years at New York City's Bellevue Hospital, where he became a senior assistant and house surgeon.  He was named a state health officer in 1912, a post which he retained for the remainder of his career, working principally in the village of Deposit and the Town of Sanford.  Dr. Axtell's home and office were at 195 Front Street in the village.  He was a member of the County Medical Society, the New York State Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the Binghamton Academy of Medicine.  He was on the courtesy staff of Read Memorial Hospital, Hancock. Dr. Axtell was a past master of Deposit Lodge 396, F&AM, and was a member of Kalurah Shrine and Malta Commandery 21.  He had served as a director of Deposit Rotary Club, Broome County Chapter of the American Legion, having served in World War I as battalion surgeon.  He was a local surgeon for the Erie Railroad and was a member of the Broome County Medical society, the New York State Medical society and the American Medical Association.  he had been a director of the Broome County Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Deposit Student Educational Loan fund.  On June 14 Drs. Axtell and Latimer were honored at a testimonial dinner at Oquaga Lake, sponsored by the Deposit Community council.
