Death of LS. Pierce:  We regret to learn by a dispatch from Fortress Monroe, that Mr. L.S. Pierce, assistant Sutler in 114th N.Y. Regiment, died in the Chesapeake Hospital at that place, of inflammation of the lungs, on the 27th ult.  Mr. P. was a respected citizen of this village, and has been favorably known for several years to merchants and dealers of a large section of this, Otsego and Chenango counties, as the traveling agent of Messrs. Gurley, and more recently of Mr. S.L. Bradley of Auburn.  In October last he received the offer of an eligible business situation in Col. Smith's Regiment, which he joined at Baltimore, and afterwards accompanied it to Fortress Monroe, where, after a brief illness, he died.  It seems but as yesterday that he left us, the picture of health and with high hopes for the future, so soon, alas, to be returned a lifeless corpse to his beloved but now desolate household.  Madison Observer.

Promotion, 114th Reg't:  Nicholas A. Dederer of Greene [Chenango Co., NY], has been promoted to the Captaincy of the Company, lately made vacant by the resignation of Capt. R. McDonald.

Death of a Brave:  Among the heartrending deaths of the late battle at Fredericksburg, we have seen none more deplorable than that of William Kirkland Bacon, Adjutant of the 26th Regiment.  Young Bacon was the son of Hon. Wm. S. Bacon of Utica [Oneida Co., NY], a Justice of the Supreme Court, and although little more than eighteen years of age, and not robust of body, he early enlisted for the war in the 14th Regiment, was in the last battle of Bull Run, where he received a wound in the foot, and then again at the late battle at Fredericksburg received a shot above the knee, which rendered amputation necessary, and which resulted in his death.  Adjutant Bacon was an only son and a member of the junior class at Hamilton College at the time he joined the army.
