Deaths
At Sand Prairie, Illinois, on the 26th ult. Rodney A. Pellet, son of David Pellet, of this town [Norwich, Chenanog Co., NY], aged 34 years. [Aug. 1, 1849]
At Smithville [Chenango Co., NY], on Wednesday, the 25th ult. Mr. David Grant, aged 71 years. Mr. Grant was one of the first settlers of the town of Smithville and was highly respected. He was a man of large property which he acquired by his own enterprise and industry. He died very suddenly, it is supposed from a disease of the heart, as he had been out of health for some time. [Aug. 8, 1849]
In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], on the 27th ult. Harriet [Williams], and on the 30th ult. Mary Louisa [Williams] twin children of James and Harriet Williams, aged 5 months. In Coventry [Chenango Co., NY], on the 19th ult. Edward Cornell, M.D., aged 56 years. Doct. Cornell was born in Guilford in this County [Chenango Co., NY], May 17th, 1793. With the ordinary education, which was then accessible in the country, he entered upon the study of Medicine at the age of eighteen with Doct. Colby Knapp, of his native town. His term of four years pupilage was spent with him, the late Doct. Peres Packer, of Oxford, and Doct. Mitchell, of Norwich. He took a license from the Chenango County Medical Society, in 1814, and in a few months thereafter he settled in the town of Coventry, where for the space of nearly thirty-six years, he has resided, in the faithful discharge of the often arduous and always responsible duties of his profession. In the vicissitudes incident to a professional life in a new county, Doct. Cornell had his full share, but he grew with the growth, and strengthened with the strength of his adopted town. As a professional man, Doct. Cornell was prompt, energetic and faithful, all classes can bear testimony to the devotion with which his services were performed, and in all his professional relations, his brethren have many characteristics to commend, and few to condemn. He was a man of fair native talent and devoted himself exclusively to his profession. Death has literally overtaken him with his harness on, in the field of his duty, and his loss will be regretted by an extensive circle of friends and patrons. As a man, he was very much respected. He represented his native County in the Legislature of the State, in the year 1843, and creditably discharged its duties. He died at his residence, in Coventry, on the 19th ult, of Dysentery of about two weeks standing, in the 57th year of his age. He has left a wife and family to mourn his loss, but they know they have an extensive circle of sympathizers in this their sincere bereavement. P. [Aug. 1, 1849]
