Fatal Accident and Loss of Lives
A friend has furnished us with the following particulars of a most painful and melancholy accident.
On Saturday afternoon last, 30th ult., Rev. Samuel D. Ferguson with Mrs. Ferguson and a company of young ladies from the Charlotte Academy, were on a visit at the residence of Abm. Becker, Esq., in South Worcester, Otsego County [NY], a few miles from the Academy. During the afternoon, the young ladies, accompanied by a niece and children of Mr. Becker, walked out, and without the knowledge of Mr. B. or Mr. Ferguson, went to a mill pond about 100 rods from the house, when a son of Mr. B., a lad about 10 years old, proposed taking a ride in a small boat with the young ladies. The niece desired them not to do so; some of them promised they would not, and she started with several of the company to return to the house. Soon after she heard screams and ran for help. James Strain, Esq., residing near the pond, heard the cries, and with his family, immediately went to their assistance, and found the son of Mr. B. and four young ladies in the water; the lad with much presence of mind, swam about, and placed the hands of some of the young ladies on the side of the boat, and told them to hold fast until assistance came and then swam for the shore. Mr. Strain noticing that two of the young ladies were about sinking, and being a good swimmer, pulled off his coat and shoes and plunged in after them; when he got within reach, they took hold of him, and he made for the shore, but had proceeded but a short distance when one of them in her fright grasped him around the neck and the other by one arm, which at once disabled. him, and all three sank in about 11 feet of water. The bodies were recovered in about 30 minutes, but life was extinct.
The other two young ladies seized a rope thrown to them and were drawn ashore and saved. One of the young ladies drowned was Hannah Ann Ferguson, and the other Frances Sybil, both of New York city, about 14 years of age; one was an only daughter.
Mr. Strain was in the 46th year of his age, a worthy and highly esteemed citizen, and has left a wife and eight children to mourn the loss of a husband and father, who lost his life in the benevolent, though vain attempt to save the lives of those with whom he was a total stranger.
