Obituaries (July 20)

Lewis J. Newton, 28, who was critically injured in a motorcycle-automobile crash in Binghamton early Wednesday night, died Friday at City Hospital.  A machine operator at Remington Rand, Mr. Newton, was a resident of Montrose, Pa., R.D.2.  Honorably discharged from the Army May 12, 1943, Mr. Newton was the father of two small children.  His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Newton, of Montrose, also survive.  Death resulted from a fractured skull and other injuries.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, May 18, 1944]

George T. Tanner, aged 83, of Afton [Chenango Co., NY], died at his home there last Thursday evening.  He is survived by his widow, Estella; one daughter, Mrs. Bernice DuMond, of Afton; two sons, Thurston of Columbia City, Ind., and Gilman, of Norwich; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  A private funeral service was held at his home Sunday afternoon.  The Rev. Allen Douglas officiated.  Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, May 18, 1944]

Mrs. Cora A. Hendrickson, 82, died Friday at her home in Afton [Chenango Co., NY], after a long illness.  She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Andrews and Mrs. Clara Meek, both of Afton.  Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at Tabor's Funeral Home, with the Rev. Allen Douglas officiating. Burial was in the East side Cemetery, Afton.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, May 18, 1944]

George Mulwane, of New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY], died suddenly of a heart attack while at work on the O.&W. Railroad, Monday morning at 10:30.  funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Colwell's Chapel, Bainbridge.  [Bainbridge news & Republican, May 18, 1944]

Final rites were held Wednesday afternoon from the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin, for the late Giles McPherson, of Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], whose death occurred in the winter at the home of his daughter. Mrs. Jack Anthony, and husband.  The body was placed in its final resting place in the Riverview Cemetery, Oxford. [Bainbridge News & Republican, May 25, 1944]

Funeral services for Harry S. Smith, who died at his home in Bridge street, Sidney [Delaware Co., NY], Friday night, were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Carr & Landers Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charlton E. Opdyke, pastor of the Congregational Church officiating.  Burial was in the Franklin Cemetery [Delaware Co., NY].  Mr. Smith was born Jan. 24, 1874, at Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], the son of Frank and Adelaide (Ramsdell) Smith.  He was married to Rose Cleveland, who survives him.  He was production manager for 23 years for the Dairymen's League until he retired about two years ago.  He came to Sidney from Utica 21 years ago and had made his residence here since then.  He is also survived by a son, Sidney, whose home is in Edmeston but is now in the U.S. Navy; a daughter, Marjorie, of Sidney, three grandchildren, Hugh, who is in the U.S. Navy, Jean and Arlene, of Edmeston; also a sister, Mrs. Emerson Smith, who lives in the Unadilla Road.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, May 25, 1944]

Mrs. Anna Michaels Wheeler, aged 77, widow of Antone Wheeler, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Florence Kain, at Lew Beach, Monday evening after a short illness.  Mrs. Wheeler, a resident of New York, had been spending two weeks with her daughter.  Death was due to heart disease. the body was taken to New York. 
 
The Rev. Emmett Sloat died recently at Monticello [Sullivan Co., NY].  He had suffered a hip fracture in a fall on an icy sidewalk in front of his home about two months ago.

Mrs. Ferris Bekin, of Bloomville [Delaware Co., NY], died last week Wednesday at Delhi hospital after a two-week illness with influenza, pleurisy and complications.  Mrs. Bekin's death occurred eight weeks after the death of her son.

DeWitt Southard, former town of Otego [Otsego Co., NY] supervisor, died on Tuesday of last week a his home in Prattsville [Greene Co., NY].

Mrs. Ellen Clark O'Keefe, of Liberty [Sullivan Co., NY], the mother of 10 living children and the widow of Michael O'Keefe died Apr. 30, aged 87.
