Obituaries (July 21)

Elizabeth Corbin Lewis died in the Brooklyn Hospital May 11, 1944, where she had been a patient only a week, although in poor health for more than a year.  Born on the Corbin Homestead, near Bennettsville [Chenango Co., NY], Oct. 27, 1867, she was the daughter of Devillo White and Emaline (Mosher) Corbin.  Mrs. Lewis resided in Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], where she graduated from the Free Academy, until her marriage to D Ward Lewis, of Brooklyn, on Sept. 16, 1890, at which time she moved to Brooklyn, returning summers to their home in Bennettsville.  She was a member of the First Unitarian Church, of Brooklyn.  Her life was one of service and she contributed generously to many charitable organizations.  She will long be remembered by her many friends for her happy cheerful nature.  The deceased is survived by a son, David W. Lewis, of Brooklyn; and two granddaughters, Betty Jane Lewis and Jean Louise Lewis, of Utica; and three nephews and three nieces.  Her husband, D. Ward Lewis, passed away in December, 1942, a son, Corbin D. Lewis, of Belleville, N.J., died in 1933 and a daughter, Emelyn Louise Lewis, succumbed in 1922.  Funeral services were held at the family home in Brooklyn on May 13 at 2 o'clock with Dr. Lathrop, minister of the First Unitarian Church, of Brooklyn, officiating.  The committal was at the crematory in Brooklyn.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, May 25, 1944]
 
August Frank Kurkowski, 48, Richfield Springs [Otsego Co., NY], died at Bassett Hospital, at Cooperstown Thursday night as the result of injuries sustained in a fall earlier that afternoon.  The owner of a two-story business on Otsego Lake, that village, Kurkowski was on a ladder painting a window sash, when the ladder slipped on the cement sidewalk, pitching him from it.  He fell headfirst, witnesses of the accident said, and his death was attributed to a fractured skull and internal injuries.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, May 25, 1944]
 
Fay, the nine-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Bacon, of Binghamton [Broome Co., NY], was suffocated Monday.  He turned over on his stomach while taking a nap in a narrow baby carriage and had been smothered by blankets. The mother had left the room for a few minutes and returned shortly to find him dead.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, May 25, 1944]
 
Frank E. Norton died Saturday at his home in Sidney [Delaware Co., NY].  He was born at Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], March 22, 1874, and had lived in Sidney since he was 17.  He was the son of Eugene and Adelaide (Fryover) Norton.  In 1905 he married Martha Hutchinson of Unadilla, who survives him.  He was a woodworker, carpenter and worker in concrete.  Mrs. Rufus Whitney, a step-daughter, of Sherbrooke, Canada, survives him. Another stepdaughter, Mrs. Howard Burton, died this month in Oneonta.  The funeral was held at the Carr & Landers Funeral Home Tuesday. Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery [Sidney, NY].  The Rev. William I. Titus, 76, formerly of Windsor [Broome Co., NY], died Friday at St. James Hospital, Hornell.  He is survived by two daughters, Viola Titus, of Waynesville, N.C., and Mrs. Leo Howe, of Waverly; five sons, John of Hornell, Ralph, of Binghamton, Robert, of England, Lorin, of Camp Cook, Calif., and Harold, of Aberdeen, Md.,; two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Merritt, of Johnson City, and Mrs. Ethel Patton, of Binghamton.  The body was removed to the Clinton E. Wood Funeral home, Windsor, where the funeral was held Monday, the Rev. T. Pert Gates officiating.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Windsor.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, May 25, 1944]
 
Mrs. Edna Slater, aged 53 years, wife of Lawrence Slater, of Afton [Chenango Co., NY], died last week Tuesday morning in the Afton Hospital after a short illness.  She is survived by her husband, a daughter, Florence, and a son, Harold, who is in the U.S. service at Camp Wheeler, Ga.,  She is survived also by her mother, Mrs. Sarah Niven, and sister, Mrs. Maude Hunt, all of Afton, and two nephews, Donald and Kenneth Hunt, of New Jersey.  The funeral was held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Colwell's Funeral Parlors in Bainbridge.  The Rev Alan Douglas of the Baptist Church officiated.  Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton.  Mrs. Slater, a former school teacher, was a lifelong resident of that community.  She had served as registrar of vital statistics for the Village of Afton for a number of years and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.  Her sudden passing was a shock to her many friends and her genial, kindly manner will be missed by all, say the Enterprise.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, May 25, 1944]
 
Mrs. Elizabeth Wright, 81, was the third death in Sidney [Delaware Co., NY] in less than 24 hours.  She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Vern Cornell, Saturday.  Funeral services were held at the Cornell home Tuesday.  The Rev. Wilton J. Dubrick, Methodist Church, officiated.  Burial was in Afton.  Born in Kent, Eng., Nov. 30, 1869, she came to Long Island when five years of age.  Her husband, Charles Wright, died while they resided in Harpursville [Broome Co., NY], 12 years ago.  Since that time, she had made her home in Sidney.  Besides her daughter, she is survived by a grandson, Harold Cornell; a granddaughter, Mrs. Donald Gray, and a great granddaughter, Florence Cornell, of Sidney.  She had two brothers and a sister in England the last time she heard form there.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, June 1, 1944]
 
Private funeral services were held for Mrs. Jennie May Knapp Saturday afternoon, the Rev Charlton Opdyke, Sidney Congregational minister, officiating.  Mrs. Knapp died suddenly at her home on Wednesday, May 24, of a heart attack.  Born April 12, 1865, in Hamden, daughter of Donald Shaw and Eliza Williams Shaw, she married George E. Knapp, at Deposit on Oct. 25, 1887.  He died in May, 1932.  Her girlhood was spent in Bainbridge, and 53 years ago she came to reside in Sidney [Delaware Co., NY], where she made many friends.  She was a Presbyterian and also held offices in Susquehanna Council, No. 274, D. of P. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Susie Fritz and Mrs. Maude Dunne; a son, Ronald Knapp, of Sidney; one sister, Mrs. Harriet Eckett, of Chicago, Ill.; several grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, June 8, 1944]
