Obituaries (August 31)

Miss Grace Andrews, daughter of Mr. Lemon L. Andrews, of Coventryville [Chenango Co., NY], died at the home of Rev. Mr. Benjamin, on Caswell street, Monday, after a week's illness with typhoid pneumonia.  Her age was 18 years.  The funeral was held from the Baptist church today (Wednesday) at 12 o'clock and the remains laid to rest in Glenwood cemetery.  Rev. Henry Hill was the officiating clergyman and Funeral Director Emens had charge of the arrangements.  The afflicted parents have the sympathy of the entire community in their great bereavement. Daniel Compropst, 29, of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], died early Tuesday morning in the Bainbridge Hospital after suffering a broken neck and a brain injury when a 24-foot I beam fell on him while at work Monday morning.  An employee of Frank Lewis & son, Mr. Compropst was constructing a canopy on Pratt's Garage when the accident occurred.  Graydon Quick who lives in Afton, was also painfully injured in the same accident when he fell with the iron a distance of 12 feet.  Mr. Quick was up on the construction work waiting for the beam to be swung into place when the cable dropped with its load to the ground taking him with it.  The end of the beam hit Mr Compropst and a car belonging to Dr. Johnson of Bainbridge, smashing in the hood of the car.  Mr. Quick was able to assist in lifting the iron from the more seriously injured man but later went for a physical examination himself.  Mr. Quick received a badly lacerated leg and brush burns and many bruises.  Mr. Compropst was a brother of Mrs. Archie Holdrege and Mrs. Frank Lee of Afton.  [Afton Enterprise,  Oct. 18, 1945]

Fatally injured when he was struck by a D.&H. passenger train as he drove across the Scott Street crossing in Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY] Tuesday afternoon, Paul Ahrens, 50 of Bennettsville [Chenango Co., NY] died shortly afterward in Bainbridge Hospital. According to railroad officials the watchman at the crossing tried to stop Mr Ahrens who was operating a light truck.  An employee of the Charles Eldred Feed mill of Bainbridge, Mr. Ahrens is survived by his wife and several married children.  [Afton Enterprise, Oct. 25, 1945]

Funeral services for Mrs. Frances E. Taylor, who died at her home on Adams street in Sidney [Delaware Co., NY] on Friday, were held Monday afternoon at the Carr and Landers Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilton J. Dubrick, pastor of the Sidney Methodist Church officiating.  Burial was in the Prospect Hill cemetery [Sidney, NY].  Mrs. Taylor was born in Masonville [Delaware Co., NY] September 23, 1866, the daughter of Cornelius and Ourelia (Littlebrandt) Cornell.  She was the widow of Smith Taylor who died several years ago.  She made her home in Sidney for over thirty years.  Surviving are several nieces and nephews, Mrs. Van Birdsall of Willow street, Sidney, and Mrs. Claire Stillman, of Bainbridge, are nieces.  [Sidney Enterprise, July 12, 1945]

PITTSLEY:  In North Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], January 29, 1892, Mrs. Hannah Pittsley, wife of Clark Pittsley, aged 50 years.

WEED:  In McDonough [Chenango Co., NY], January 30, 1892, Earl, infant son of Carrol K. and Bessie Wood, aged 10 months.

WARN:  In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], January 30, 1892, James W. Warn, aged about 50.  The day of his death was the twenty fifth anniversary of his marriage.

HITCHCOCK:  In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], January 31, 1892, Emma, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. DeWitt Hitchcock.

NEWTON:  In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], January 27, 1892, William S. Newton, aged 83 years.

WATROUS:  In Deep River, Conn., January 28, 1892, Mrs. Susan A. Watrous, formerly Mrs. E.N. Hawley, aged 86 years, at one time a resident of Greene [Chenango Co., NY].

MANWARRING:  In Binghamton [Broome Co., NY], January 27, 1892, Lydia H. Manwarring, wife of Leonard Manwarring, of Guilford [Chenango Co., NY].
