Marriages (September 1)

The following news item is taken from "Manchester Evening News" of Manchester, England:  "Mr. and Mrs. James Clancy of Didsbury, Manchester, wish to announce the engagement of their eldest daughter, Kathleen Theresa, (L.A.C.W. serving in the W.A.A.C.) to Pfc. Frank Burleson Swackhammer, U.S.A.A.F., only son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Swackhammer of Kanona, N.Y. [Steuben Co.], U.S.A.  The marriage will take place on October 18th, at St. Aidans Presbyterian Church, Didsbury, Manchester, England.  [Afton Enterprise, Oct. 25, 1945]

Miss Thelma E. Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Taylor, was married to Elwyn D. Hitchcock, son of Joseph Hitchcock, Tuesday, Nov. 6, at noon, in Owego.  The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Conklin, pastor of the Frist Baptist Church.  After returning from a trip to Niagara Falls, they are residing at their new home recently purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Borge Andersen.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Nov. 15, 1945]

The stone fireplace in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray King of Harpursville [Broome Co., nY] was banked with palms, white chrysanthums and candelabra with white tapers, for the marriage of their daughter, Barbara Jane, to Francis E. Pond, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ferris Pond of Center Village [Broome Co., NY].  The double ring ceremony was performed October 20th by the Rev. Charles Sabin, pastor of the Harpursville Methodist church in the presence of the immediate families and friends. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a fitted gown of white net over satin with lace bodice and a matching finger tip length veil of illusion, and carried a bouquet of white roses.  As matron of honor Mrs. Bernard Lovejoy chose a pink net gown and carried a bouquet of pink roses and blue delphinium.  The bride's mother was dressed in wine velvet and wore a corsage of white gardenias. The bridegroom's mother chose blue velvet and wore a corsage of gardenias.  Bernard Lovejoy was the best man for Mr. Pond.  Preceding the ceremony, Mrs. Richard Mosher rendered a program of wedding music.  following the ceremony, a reception was held and buffet luncheon served to about 50 guests. The dining room was decorated in autumn colors. The bride's table was centered with a tiered bride's cake with smilax and white tapers in silver candelabras completing the table appointments.  Mrs. Pond was graduated form the Harpursville Central School and Lowell's School of Business.  Mr. Pond was also a graduate of the Harpursville Central School.  For traveling, Mrs. Pond wore a gray suit with black accessories and a corsage of red roses. After a short wedding trip, Mr. and Mrs. Pond will make their home in Harpursville.  [Afton Enterprise, Oct. 25, 1945]

Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Ross of Harpursville R.D.2 [Broome Co., NY] announced the engagement of their daughter Miss Yvonne Elizabeth Bugbee to Pfc. Howard Griswold Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Griswold of Sanitaria Springs [Broome Co., NY].  Miss Bugbee is a graduate of Harpursville Central School.  She is a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps at Hartwick College and at present time is training at Murphy Memorial Hospital in Rome, Private Griswold, A Binghamton North High School graduate, entered the army in November 1944.  He is now stationed in the Philippines.  [Afton Enterprise, Oct. 25, 1945]

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ryno in Syracuse [Onondaga Co., NY] was the scene of a quiet wedding Saturday evening October 27 when Mrs. Jennie Shaw and Fred Tabor, both of Afton [Chenango Co., NY] were united in marriage.  The Rev. Thomas Kirkwood of Syracuse performed the ceremony.  They will reside at 57 Main Street, Afton.  Afton Enterprise, Nov. 1, 1945]
