Died: In this village [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY], on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 29th, Sarah Jane Newkirk, in the 29th year of her age. The life of this young lady was a very beautiful exemplification of the Christian graces. Early dedicated to the Lord in the Sacrament of Baptism, of great natural amiability of temper, and from her childish years manifesting a tender conscientiousness and a very high degree of religious sensibility; at the age of sixteen she took upon herself the vows of the Christian covenant, in the Apostolic rite of confirmation, and soon after was admitted to partake of the support of the Lord. Her career thenceforward was a singularly uniform and consistent one, rich in those fruits which demonstrated her faith to be a living, effective principle and not merely emotional or sentimental. Whatever duty she undertook was punctually, constantly and perseveringly performed. As a Sunday School Teacher, in which capacity she labored faithfully for many years, she was eminently successful in winning the affection of her pupils, the secret of her influence over them being a heart full of loving interest in their spiritual welfare, and so unfailing as to constrain her to continue her kind offices in their behalf even after a due regard for her declining health demanded that she should absent herself from the school. As a member of St. Paul's choir she exhibited a like fidelity. In gentle offices to the sick or needy she was ever prompt. An affectionate daughter and sister, a constant friend, a cheerful companion, an exemplary Christian; of such tenderness for the feelings of others, that the apprehension of having by word or act, caused another pain would not suffer her to rest until she had done what she could to make reparation for the supposed offence. Her removal from our midst has created a vacancy in our little community which will long be felt by those who knew her best. Of a more than usually diffident and retiring disposition, she seemed to shrink from speaking much about her religious experience. We have ever observed a like reluctance in them, in the depth and reality of whose piety we had most reason to confide. But from those who marked well her life and conversation, the grace within, which fashioned them, could not be hidden. Her humility, too, forbade the making a display of her feelings. True evangelical goodness has no consciousness of its own worth. It prostrates itself at the foot of the Cross, and pleads not its own merits, but the forgiveness of its unworthiness and imperfection for Jesus' sake. Such was the Rock upon which our departed sister built her hope. And well did it sustain her in the trying hour. When apprised that her end was at hand, she welcomed the message which summoned her hence and looked joyfully forward to that "rest which remaineth for the people of God." The bed of death was made to appear to those who surrounded it as the very threshold of Paradise. Wondrously did her Savior sustain her. To sum up all in one little word, her own song of victory, her end was "peace, prefect peace."

Died: In this village [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY], on the 10th inst., Mrs. Thankful M. Holmes, aged 66 years.
Died: In this city [Houston, Texas] on the 19th of Oct. of yellow fever, Frances [Perkins], wife of Alvin S. Perkins, late of Oxford, N.Y. [Chenango Co.]. Though this estimable lady has been but a short time among us, she had won the esteem and love of all who came within the circle of her influence, uniting as she did the charms of warmest friendship with the faith and practice of a Christian. Almighty God has in His wisdom taken from the church a true daughter, from her family a faithful and devoted wife, mother and sister, and from her friends if possible, a more than friend. But we may give Him thanks for the good example of this humble and faithful servant, who having finished her course in faith, now rests from her labors. Her last words were "It is finished." Yes, her race is run, her battle fought, her victory won. She now dwells with Him who is the resurrection and the life. Died: In this city [Houston, Texas], of consumption, on the 22d Oct. in the 50th year of his age, Mr. Leonard S. Perkins, formerly of Oxford, N.Y. [Chenango Co.]. Honored by all, as faithful in every worldly trust, yet honored as a true and consistent follower of Christ, has this beloved friend walked with us, during the past 20 years. Since the organization of the Protestant Episcopal Chruch in Texas, Mr. Perkins has been a Warden or Vestryman, of either Christ's Church, Houston, or St. Paul's Church, Galveston. His consistency and devotion in this respect, was characterized in the quiet and unobtrusive faithfulness of a Godly and consistent life. Beyond common allotment his last illness was protracted, but the language of gratitude and appreciation of the blessings, as he termed them, by which he was soothed and comforted and with that peace which passes all understanding, he met his Master's call, resigned his beloved wife and sightless boy into the hands of Him who gave them. But these friends whom he hath left in the darkness of affliction, have the brightest hope to cheer them, that the path of the just, even though it passeth through the valley of the shadow of death, is as the shining light which shineth more and more unto the perfect day. The brightest record which mortal can leave, was his. His name so dear to earth, is now written in the book of life, by Him who says "Whosoever liveth and believth in me, shall never die." Ira P. Barnes, Esq. late of Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY] in this county, a prominent Democratic politician, and a few years since Clerk of the Senate of this State, died last week at Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, where he had lately removed.
