Oriskany Falls, Oneida Co. NY: Herbert E. King died at his residence on Friday, the 18th, aged 30 years, 5 months and 15 days. Such is the brief announcement that brings grief and aching void to the hearts of many. The heart that once beat with love to all, envy to none, has ceased its throbbing forever. Consumption, that dreadful disease, hurried him to a premature grave, and his spirit to realms of everlasting peace and joy. Our village deeply regrets his untimely death and tender our sympathy to his wife in this hour of her sad bereavement.

On Saturday night last a sad accident occurred about six miles this side of Norwich [Chenango Co. NY] on the N.Y.&O. Midland RR, by which Robert Wheeler, a young man about 21 years of age lost his life. Mr. Wheeler was employed as brakeman on a freight train, which position he has held for some time. On that night, when a few miles north of Norwich, he was riding in the engine, when suddenly the engine, tender and one car broke loose from the rest of the train. After the engine slackened, the unfortunate man went back and took his position for coupling the train, when the engine backed up sufficiently. It being quite dark the brakeman did not discover that one of the bumpers had been broken from one of the cars and when they came together they crushed him in so severe a manner that he fell into the hands of the fireman and expired in a few moments after the accident. The young man boarded at Mrs. Randall's on Lake St., Oneida [Madison Co. NY]. His body was brought to this village on Sunday morning and placed in a vault to await the arrival of his parents who reside at Carthage, Jefferson Co. [NY] where the body will be taken for burial. As Dr. Carpenter is absent, a coroner was summoned from Chittenango on Monday and an inquest held over the body.
