In Milford [Otsego Co. NY] on the 6th inst. by Levi Stewart, Esq. Mr. Asa Gould of th is village [Cherry Valley, Otsego Co. NY] to Miss Eunice Campbell of the former place.

Death

The unpleasant office devolves upon us, says the N.Y. Commercial, of announcing the death of the venerable and estimable Dr. John R.B. Rogers of this city [NYC].  Dr. R. was one of the few patriots of the revolutionary stock who yet lingered amongst us.  He was a surgeon in the Pennsylvania line of the Revolutionary army, and after the close of the contest, he settled in Philadelphia, where he practiced his profession for several years.  From thence he removed to this city, where he has resided ever since.  He was a son of the Rev. Dr. Rogers, formerly for a long period pastor of the Water St. church and also of the Brick church in Beekman St. then included in the same ecclesiastical charge. The deceased was long eminent in his profession, and was for many years health officer of the port.  Since his retirement from that office, about 20 years ago, he has attended but little to his profession.  He was a man of great purity of life and clearness of intellect and a more patriotic heart never throbbed in the bosom of humanity.  His mind wandered not a moment until the last hour and his exit was characterized by that tranquility and peace of mind which marks the close of a life well spent in the discharge of all the duties of a good citizen and a devout Christian.

Death

At Jamestown, Chautauqua Co. [NY] on the 16th instant, Nathaniel Hawks, Esq. Attorney at Law, formerly a resident of this village [Cherry Valley, Otsego Co NY], and son of James Hawks, Esq of Richfield [Otsego Co. NY], aged about 25 years.

The news of the sudden death of this young man has cast a gloom over the countenances of the extended circle of his friends here and again teaches them the admonitory lesson that neither youth or health nor strength of constitution can ward off the shaft of the destroyer.

The deceased had just established himself in business under favorable auspices and his sudden removal is a source of poignant regret and grief to his numerous relatives and friends.  He had many ardent friends; no enemies; the universal regret expressed by all on hearing of his death is his best eulogy.

News Item

The exciting topic of conversation here is the result of the coroner's jury at Guilford [Chenango Co. NY] in the case of Miss Elizabeth Belden whose death was caused by abortion, at Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY], under the treatment of Dr. Meacham of that place, who, it was charged, was in the employ of Mr. C.F. Horton, one of our respectable citizens, a prominent member of the Baptist church and the Superintendent of its Sunday school, at whose house Miss Belden had been staying during the past winter.  Dr. Meacham having left the country, Mr. H. is held in the sum of $5,000 to await the action of the Grand jury of Chenango County.  Reports of the investigation by the coroner are found in the Chenango Union and Telegraph.

____________________

The village of Guilford, Chenango County, is just now somewhat excited over the death of Miss Elizabeth Belden.  She died in Bainbridge on Friday, April 25th, and as her residence was Guilford, she was taken to that place for burial.  But the facts of the case looked so suspicious that the Coroner, Mr. Spencer, concluded that an inquest should be held.  He took charge of the body, summoned a jury, and proceeded to investigate the matter.  An autopsy of the body was made by Dr. Avery of Norwich which plainly showed that the woman was a victim of an abortion which caused her death.

The Oxford Times says:  The Coroner is determined to make a thorough investigation and, in all probability, the guilty parties will be apprehended and brought to justice.  There are many rumors afloat and names coupled with this terrible crime which might be given, but we are in duty bound to withhold them until after the conclusion of the inquest.  The deceased was aged 34 years and has two sisters and a brother living in Guilford.

Norwich, April 30:  The jury at Guilford, in the case of Elizabeth Belden, concluded its labors today. The greater portion of the evidence is kept secret by the officials, but it is understood that in her dying statement the woman implicated Dr. I.D. Meacham of Bainbridge and Chas. F. Horton, a young farmer of Butternuts, Otsego County [NY].  the jury returned a verdict that Miss Belden's death was caused by Dr. Meacham and C.F. Horton. These parties are held to appear before the Grand Jury.
