Thus passed from time to eternity another victim of this cruel war.  He was among the first to enlist in the cause of his country and the last year of his time was well advanced when he hoped again to join friends at home, having never had a furlough since he enlisted.  But He who rules the destinies of the world had otherwise ordered it. He had been in numerous battles and had once been shipwrecked, but the strong hand of disease has laid him low.  He died a faithful soldier and a Christian and we trust his soul now sleeps with Jesus.

"O Thou, who dry'st the mourner's tear, / How dark this world would be, / When pierced by sin and sorrow here, / We could not fly to thee!"

CADY:  A terrible tragedy occurred on Muller Hill in the town of Georgetown [Madison Co. NY] on Saturday last.  A boy, about 10 years of age, son of a Mr. Van Horn, went into the house of Ira Cady, one of his neighbors, and taking down a gun presented it at a little daughter of Mr. Cady, about 9 years old, called her by name, and said he was going to kill her.  He fired the gun, and the charge entered just between and above her eyebrows, producing death in a very short item. We have been unable to learn from the neighbors of any ill feeling of the boy towards his victim or her family and we think the shooting must have been gross carelessness, the boy not knowing the gun was loaded.
